Last-minute professional gardeners and hobbyists know for sure that to work in the garden in an optimal way it is advisable to avoid improvisations, and equip oneself with the right tools, possibly then choosing them from those of the best quality. We will examine the "basic equipment" of the hobbyist who wants to take care of the garden or terrace; It is a good idea to buy most of the tools that you will see later, doing it in time, perhaps even choosing something as a Christmas gift. Larger tools can usually also be rented in DIY stores or garden centers.

Spades, shovels, rakes

To work the soil well, plant new shrubs, mix fertilizers or drainage materials, move leaves, it is necessary to use these tools.
The Vanga is one of the fundamental tools for the garden, it can have a more or less elongated handle, which sometimes ends in a squat knob, to be gripped firmly; the metal blade is triangular in shape, flat, it is used to make holes for planting plants, but also to work the soil in depth, making it sink at least 25-30 cm; it is possible to equip it with a short bracket, to be positioned at the bottom of the handle, to be able to sink the blade deeper into the ground. There are also spades with a rectangular or trapezoidal blade, very useful in soft soils or to cut the clods with greater precision: often the square spade is used to delimit the perimeter of the flowerbeds, or to uproot plants to move, with this tool you succeed in fact to cut the superficial roots of grass, plants and shrubs, in a precise and clean way.
The shovel is a variant of the spade, with the blade slightly cupped, it is used to move large quantities of material, earth, sand, leaves or whatever. To avoid excessive strain on the back muscles, it is advisable to use the shovel by bending the knees slightly.

Another fundamental tool in the garden consists of a metal, plastic or wooden bar, equipped with numerous elongated and pointed teeth. With the rake the garden is cleaned from the dry leaves or the ground is leveled before sowing; this tool has various other functions, which often change its shape. There are large wooden or plastic rakes, useful for removing dry grass from the turf, or for spreading the fertilizer; a variant of the rake is the metal broom; the sod break rakes carry toothed metal wheels in the bar, which, in addition to the weight of the bar itself, are very useful for breaking the clods of earth after digging it.
Very often, to work the soil thoroughly or to move large amounts of grass or leaves, the Forca is used.

Hoe and hoe

The Zappa is used to move the soil to the surface, in order to aerate it or to add the periodic fertilizations near the plants already at home; generally they consist of a rectangular blade, elongated, quite sharp, almost perpendicular to the handle, with which the clods on the surface break. There are hoes with two or more teeth, with which the ground is turned, the small blade can also be trapezoidal, triangular or drop-shaped. The Cultivator is a sort of hybrid between the fork and the hoe, very useful for moving the soil close to the plants and working it deeply.
The Sarchiatore is used to weed the soil, or to cut off weeds at the base before removing them.

Grass scissors

There are many types of scissors, the fundamental is the normal gardening shears; in addition to the classic models, there are also double-beating, fixed blades, or the most innovative types equipped with gear or jack, designed to reduce the effort required to cut branches even of medium diameter. The choice between the various models is generally due to very personal points of view, for those who practice the hobby of gardening a good pair of shears, with resistant and well sharpened blades, it is however good, regardless of the model. There are also models with thin tips, suitable for picking fruit or for cut flowers, which are sometimes used as universal scissors, since not everyone can afford to have 4-5 different model scissors, especially to prune small branches.
For hedges in general large scissors are used, with long blades and a long handle, which are increasingly being replaced by electric or motorized hedge trimmers, whose price justifies the purchase only for those who have large hedge garden extensions; this type of tool can also possibly be rented; the same can be said of the lawn mower, a very useful tool, almost essential, but which is not always necessary to buy. For very small extensions of turf, or for trimming the edges, grass shears are also used.
To prune branches very high, the pruner is used, a tool with a very sharp blade, which is mounted on the top of a long handle, the mechanism, manoeuvrable by pulling a cord, allows us to trim even branches at heights of over 2-3 meters , as long as they are not too large.
For pruning of large branches it will be necessary to have a saw or a saw, during the purchase of these tools we should not be surprised by the price differences between the tools of the various brands: often a high price is motivated by higher quality blades, which they guarantee faster and more precise work.
In addition to these tools, it is also good to have some objects that can be used in particular cases.
For insecticidal and anticryptogamic treatments it is necessary to have a nebulizer, in order to be able to vaporize at best the chemicals on the plants avoiding excessively large drops; there are various sizes, by hand or shoulder; we choose the model that best suits the extension of our garden.
For cutting, trimming, sawing sprigs, weeds and weeds, we can also buy roncole of various types and sizes, maybe even a small one to secure to the belt.
To plant, bury and make holes of various kinds in the ground we can use a squat stick, but on the market we find very useful plant bulbs and tools specifically designed to plant small plants, quickly practicing small holes.
Many gardeners always have in their pockets a sharp grafting knife, also useful for cutting raffia or laces of various types, or for checking for parasites under the barks.
Let us always remember to wear a pair of sturdy and water-repellent shoes, to avoid that on Sunday afternoons in the garden it resolves with an injury or a cold; working with materials of various types and various tools we always wear gloves, to avoid hurting ourselves, but also to remove the possibility of contact with chemicals used in the garden, such as insecticides, fungicides or fertilizers.
For many jobs we will also need a pair of plasitca glasses and maybe a pvc apron, elastic but resistant.
