Woodlice is an insect or crustacean, where it lives, what it eats

Pests belong to the suborder crustaceans from the order of isopods. They are the descendants of ancient arthropods that came out of the water. Modern woodlice are not well adapted to life on land; they prefer rather humid places.

Although some species can live in deserts or very salty bodies of water, it is the species that loves dampness that makes its way into our apartments.

Such crustaceans are naturally found in shaded areas saturated with moisture. They are localized mainly in wet crevices, in the ground under awnings, in heaps of debris or rotting foliage. They also enjoy living under rocks or fallen tree trunks.

In settlements, crustaceans settle in wooden houses with areas of rotted walls and floors. They can be found in cellars and basements. From there, the pests scatter over considerable distances and can settle in an apartment with high humidity or leaking pipes. Their favorite places are flower pots and greenhouses.

Crustaceans are herbivores. They rarely feed on living plants, preferring rotten grass.

They are classified as detritivores. This means that the pests eat mostly dead tissue, in which the decomposition process has already begun.

Woodlice in nature, do they harm humans and plants

The harm of wood lice is greatly exaggerated. Feeding on rotten grass and foliage, they rarely damage plant roots. If the crustaceans are located in the cellar, they will eat spoiled vegetables and root vegetables.

In flower pots, pests do not significantly interfere with the nutrition of flowers and seedlings. On the contrary, the products of their vital activity enrich the soil with useful substances. Of course, this applies to a small number of crustaceans.

Large colonies of woodlice can damage walls and ceilings in the house. In the process of movement, they destroy cardboard, gypsum and wood. Numerous crustaceans in seedlings compact the soil and absorb moisture, preventing the plant from developing normally.

In the apartment, hordes of pests are scared by a repulsive appearance. Activating in the dark, when a light source appears, they scatter to the sides, like cockroaches. Since crustaceans move through garbage and dirt, they are able to bring infection into the house on their paws. This is especially dangerous if crustaceans get on food.

When it comes to bites, you don't have to worry about that. The structure of the jaw of crustaceans involves chewing soft food.

Their oral cavity is not adapted for biting through the skin. Therefore, wood lice are safe for humans and animals.

What are woodlice afraid of, how to get rid of them

It is not worth getting rid of crustaceans in the garden. There they are much more useful than dangerous. But there are places where pest control is essential.

In a private house

First of all, it is important to reduce the humidity in the room and carry out a thorough cleaning. Colonies of crustaceans signal that there is a serious leak or rotting somewhere. In this case, repairs are indispensable.

Next, it is worth blocking pests from entering the house. To do this, strips of salt are poured one and a half centimeters wide at door and window openings. Moving through them, crustaceans become dehydrated and do not go further. It is also necessary to seal even the smallest cracks in the walls.

Without these events, it will not be possible to bring uninvited guests out. Only after putting the premises in order can insecticides be used. The most effective remedies for ants.

In the greenhouse

First you need to check if the watering of the plants is not too abundant. Waterlogged soil attracts pests and is not always useful for crops. The next step is to clean the area. It is necessary to get rid of wet boards and logs, collect garbage in resealable containers, cover manure heaps and composts.

Chemical preparations (Thunder, Aktara, Ideal) and folk remedies are suitable for processing plants.

Experienced gardeners use:

  • tobacco
  • soda
  • ash
  • ground red pepper

In the cellar

To eliminate excess moisture, good ventilation and regular ventilation are required. Quicklime or salt is scattered in the corners. Do not store empty containers in the cellar. Vegetables and fruits must be clean and dry. They are regularly sorted out in order to remove rot in a timely manner.

Wood lice can be collected using traps. To do this, in places of their accumulation, potatoes or carrots with a core cut out are left. A damp cloth or birch broom will also work. The crustaceans will get into the bait, and in the morning it will be enough to take them outside and destroy them. A similar trick will work in a greenhouse as well.

How to get rid of wood lice in seedlings

It is not difficult to understand that pests have settled in pots. The soil dries quickly and becomes compacted. When loosening, white larvae can be seen. In this case, a plant transplant will be required. The roots are freed from the ground and washed in a weak solution of potassium permanganate. The seedlings are transferred to a new place, and the spoiled pots with soil are thrown away.

In the future, you need to ensure that there are enough drainage holes in the containers. By the way, if there are not too many crustaceans in the seedlings, there will be more benefits from them than harm.

They fertilize the soil well, and due to the efficient processing of nitrogenous compounds, they contribute to rapid growth.

Is the use of boric acid effective from wood lice

Not too much, to be honest. The product is in the form of grains that crustaceans do not eat. If you spray a substance dissolved in water in places where pests accumulate, its concentration will be too low. Boric acid must enter the body of woodlice by food, so external spraying will not affect the crustaceans. There will be little benefit from the drug, but not more than from ordinary salt.

Crowds of wood lice that have settled in the house and in the beds can greatly spoil the mood. You should not expect any serious harm from them.

And getting rid of crustaceans is easy. Even chemicals may not be needed, it is enough just to eliminate excess moisture in the room and on the site.
